Water Project Update 1/4/09 - Safi School Project has been working with Ngateu Secondary School to design a sustainable clean water source.
- Currently water is gathered in buckets from a nearby ditch or stream for all school needs. The water is not clean. There is no community well. Students go thirsty while at school. Water is not abundant in the community, especially during drought.
- Initially we designed a water harvest project. While in the early execution of our plan, we were told that there was now a company drilling successful wells in the area. (Initially we were told this was not an option.) Since a well is far superior to water harvesting for consistency, quantity and quality of water we switched gears.
- The well will be deep, 110 meters, at an estimated cost of $30,000. Safi School Project is working with Rotary clubs in Lacy - WA, Arusha - Tanzania and with Rotary International to find matching funds for this project.
- In October we visited a nearby well by the same driller we are working with. It looked good. We did a great deal of research. We believe the plan for Ngateu is sound. We also spoke to many people in Tanzania about our plans. To a person they all said that water, especially clean water, was a problem and greatly needed. They encouraged our work with hope in their eyes.
- The benefits of clean water go beyond thirst, health and sanitation. Many hours are spent every day gathering water. This chore is done by everyone. A well will ease this burden. There will be more time for studying. If the well is successful, the school intends to share this abundance with the community.
